We’ve heard all week about the rich tradition of the two teams headed for the NFC Championship and the great history of the rivalry which has made for a great storyline but the truth is, when the Chicago Bears (12-5) and the Green Bay Packers (12-6) take the field in the 2011 NFC title game the history will be thrown out the window and it will be the teams’ defenses that win or lose this marquee NFL betting odds matchup.

The success of both of these teams this year begins and ends with their defenses and they’ve two of the best in the league. In scoring, ranking and overall defense few teams have been better than either the Bears or the Packers and fans looking to see a offense shootout in this game are probably delusional and will be greatly disappointed.

Kickoff for this Sunday matchup is set for 3:05 Eastern Time and SBG Global Sportsbook opened with the Packers as a 3.5-point favorite with an over/under total at 43.5.

Judging by the way these defenses’ have performed in the two regular season matchups the odds NFL bookmakers put together on the over/under (43.5) even seems a bit generous.

The Packers have allowed the 2nd fewest points in the NFL (15.0) and have held the Bears under that average in their two previous meeting (11.5 ppg). The Bears defense is 4th in the NFL in points allowed (17.9 ppg) and has held the pack to just 13.5 ppg in their two regular season meetings.

Further the Packers are 5th in the NFL in yards allowed (309.1 ypg) while the Bears are also among the best in the NFL in this category (8th in the NFL) allowing just 314.9 ypg. In overall defensive rankings the Pack comes in at #5 and the Bears slightly lower on the list at 10.

All these numbers go to show that these teams have made their living on the defensive side of the ball this year and with nasty sub-zero weather and freezing rain expected at Soldier Field on Sunday the first team to 20 points is most probably going to win this NFL gambling contest.

This might just be the most exciting matchup between a 6-8 team and 5-9 teams in the history of NFL gambling. The 6-8 team in question is the resurgent St Louis Rams and the 5-9 team is the terribly disappointing San Francisco 49ers club.

Neither team will finish above .500 and normally, at this time of year a matchup like this would be little interest to anyone other than diehard fans.

But in the Wild, Wild, NFC West a winning record isn’t required to clinch the division and home field advantage in the playoffs. If the cards fall just right, the Niners could play their way into the playoffs by winning their last two games.

Or with a win in their dome, the Rams could all but wrap up the NFC west title this weekend.

Kickoff for this Sunday matchup is set for 1:05 Eastern Time and SBG Global Sportsbook opened with the Rams as a 2-point favorite with an over/under total at 39.5.

This is one of the rare times in an NFL betting odds fan’s life that the a matchup between two teams with a losing record will ever be competing for a division title in Week 16 so do not miss this.

The Rams offense has come alive under the direction of rookie QB Sam Bradford who’s putting together one of the best seasons by a rookie QB in league history. He’s got 17 TDs, 14 INTs and has already thrown for more 3,065 yards.

But he’ll need to play his best game yet to get his team past the surging 49ers.

After a slow start this team has gone 4-3 over its past 7 games and has completely dominated NFC West opponents over the past 6 weeks including a 23-20 victory against the Rams last time these teams met.

The Niners QB situation seems a bit of a question mark right now with the two Mr. Smiths (Alex and Troy) in position to get the start. The two have contrasting styles but both seem capable of winning if they can get all their receivers involved early.

The Rams have home field advantage and have the best player on the field in RB Steven Jackson, but the 49ers have a more dynamic offense when it’s clicking on all cylinders and a better defense.

Look for the Niners in a mini sports betting upset.

If you have miss any games this weekend on the NFL gambling calendar make sure you miss this game. When the Carolina Panthers (1-9) travel to the Dawg Pound to take on the Cleveland Browns (3-7) put the women and children to bed and spare them the ugliness that is the 2010 Panthers squad.

The Browns are actually a team on the cusp of being competitive but Panthers are so bad that it’s almost pitiable.

Kickoff for this Sunday matchup is set for 1:05 Eastern Time and SBG Global opened with the Browns as a 10-point favorite with an over/under total at 38.

To be fair to the Panthers, luck has not been on this team’s side as it’s lost both its top 2 QBs to injuries. Although, if you’ve seen either Matt Moore (55.6 passer rating) or Jimmy Clausen (53.8 passer rating) play this season you might argue otherwise. The team’s first two options at QB combined for 1,500+ yards and 6 TDs and 10 INTs in 9 games. And its 11.7 ppg scoring average is none to pretty to contemplate and is worst in the league by nearly a TD.

There is actually nothing good to be said about this team that is also amongst the worst in the NFL betting odds on defense as well (25th in the NFL).

Cleveland should have little to no trouble at all handing the Panthers another loss and giving it the dubious distinction of being the first team this season to reach double digits in losses.

Rookie QB Colt McCoy has been awfully good since taking over the starting job in Cleveland and RB Peyton Hillis (10 TDs) has been the breakout player of the year in the NFL.

On defense the Browns have also been decent giving up just 20.6 ppg (11th in the NFL) and should be able to pad those numbers even further against the awful Panthers.

As a simple rule this season the surest bet on any given Sunday is on the team that’s playing the Panthers. This week it just happens to be the Cleveland Browns.

Cleveland should come out on top of the sports betting mismatch and be ready to go next week after the closest thing to a bye week on the NFL schedule.

There doesn’t seem to be any great teams in the 2010 NFL betting odds right now but there is an inordinate amount of really good teams, at least a half a dozen with a legitimate shot at the Super Bowl.

The Carolina Panthers (1-7) are not one of them. In fact, despite having a better record than the still winless Buffalo Bills (0-8) is easily the worst team in football. The team has a pretty bad defense that’s giving up 23.0 ppg (22nd in the league) and an offense that is downright embarrassing (11.0 ppg).

When this travels to Tampa Bay in the Week 10 sports betting action to take on the NFC South rival Buccaneers (5-3) it will be beaten badly.

Kickoff for this Sunday matchup is set for 1:05 Eastern Time and SBG Global Sportsbook opened with the Bucs as a 6-point favorite with an over/under total at 36.5.

The Bucs should win this game easily and it’s not because this team is so talented (its winning record is more a product of an easy NFL schedule than any outstanding play) but because the Panthers are so bad.

There is not a team in the league right now that would not be favored against Carolina and this may be the surest bet of the weekend.

Carolina has been outscored by a margin of 184 to 88 this season (23-11 per game average) and that trend is not likely to change this weekend. The team’s one real talent on offense, RB DeAngelo Williams, is likely to miss another game and the Bucs defense will not even have to pretend defend Carolina’s incompetent passing game (175.6 yards per game, 6 TDs and 14 INTs). The team’s two headed monster behind center rookie Jimmie Clausen and career backup Matt Moore have combined for a 51.5 completion percentage and an embarrassing combined passer rating of just over 50.

The Bucs defense should easily keep this pathetic unit in check and score a few TDs for its own account.

Second-year QB Josh Freeman has shown tremendous improvement this season and sports an 85.8 passer rating with 10 TDs, only 5 INTs and a couple of come from behind wins.

Not likely he’ll have to bring his team back from a deficit on Sunday and the Bucs should steamroll the Panthers in this NFL gambling matchup.

In the first Thursday night NFL gambling matchup of the season the 6-2 Baltimore Ravens, named for a carrion scavenger will face the 6-2 Atlanta Falcons, a bird of prey, in a matchup that features two of the best defenses in the league.

Baltimore has long been known for its defensive prowess and concussion inducing hitters. But the Falcons D has quietly played its way into prominence and in some ways has been more effective than the Ravens’ D this season. Both teams’ D rank in the top ten in the league and will have a huge role to play in this Week 10 showdown.

Kickoff for this Thursday matchup is set for 8:25 Eastern Time and SBG Global Sportsbook opened with the Falcons as a 1-point favorite with an over/under total at 43.

Both teams will playing to protect their divisional leads and both teams will have just a few days to game plan for the other. As a result the defenses should have the relative advantage over the offenses as defense is more instinctive and less strategic and offense should take a back seat in this NFL gambling matchup.

The Ravens rank 6th in the NFL in points allowed this season (17.4 ppg), the Falcons are 10th (19.3). The Ravens are also the better team in terms of yards allowed (310.8 ypg vs. 346.4 ypg). But in several key areas that could mean the difference in this ball game the Falcons have a big advantage.

In a match as tight as this one turnovers could very well decide the ball game and the Falcons D has been much better in this regard with 19 takeaways (13 INTs, 6 forced fumbles) this season while the Ravens have just 12 takeaways (8 INTs, 4 FFs).
Neither team’s QB has been INT prone this season with just 11 INTs between the two through 8 games but with both teams sporting superb run defenses (Falcons are 6th in the NFL, Ravens rank 13th) the scoring will like take place through the air.

On paper and in reputation the Ravens D has the advantage but this could be night that the Falcons D comes up big and gets the home team a huge sports betting victory.

The 2-5 Cincinnati Bengals are team in trouble and their Week 9 matchup against the 5-2 Pittsburgh Steelers is a must win situation. With Cleveland’s (3-5) surprise win over the New England Patriots (6-2) on Sunday the Bengals are now in last place in the AFC North. The playoffs are all but impossibility at this point with the stiff divisional competition and the best the Bengals can hope for this season is a winning record.

But if they can get a road win over a quality team like the Steelers, the team certainly has the talent to reel off a 5-6 game win streak and with injuries to other teams in the AFC you never know what could happen.

If the results so far this season are anything to go by, however, that seems an unlikely but not impossible scenario for the Bengals.

Cincy has the talent and familiarity with the Steelers to win this Week 9 NFL gambling matchup but it will take near perfect execution and plenty of Steelers’ mistakes.

The Bengals have the sixth best passing attack in the league (265 yards per game, 12 TDs) but the team’s O-line must give QB Carson Palmer time to throw the ball. This unit has been the best in the NFL allowing just 10 sacks through 7 games.

Cincy’s receiving corps is strong and can been their men in single coverage when the Steelers blitz. Pittsburgh typically has problems with big physical receivers and TO is the original prototype for this type of player. He’s also having a terrific season with 45 catches for 89.9 yards per game and 5 TDs, all among the top 10 in the league.

And if the Bengals can get an early lead and force the Steelers into a passing offense their defense will be much more effective against Steelers offense that has stagnated somewhat over the past few games.

Kickoff for this Monday matchup is set for 8:20 Eastern Time and SBG Global Sportsbook opened with the Steelers as a 6-point favorite with an over/under total at 41.

Obviously playing on the road and against the best defense in the NFL (just 14.6 points allowed per game) the Bengals face a very difficult task in getting a win in the sports betting action, but not an impossible one.

The Vikings may not be much to look at on a football field or an NFL betting odds board but they’re a sportswriters dream. And while the team may not be able to produce many points or many wins it churns out headlines like well-oiled machine.

First it was the return of granddaddy Brett Favre, then the key injuries to the receiving corps, then the granddaddy’s sexting scandal, the arrival of superstar WR Randy Moss. Now it’s the departure of superstar WR Randy Moss that has the NFL world captivated.

Coach Brad Childress must be wishing his team could make headlines for an on field success and he’ll get his wish granted this week when the 2-5 Vikings host the 3-4 Arizona Cardinals.

Kickoff for this Saturday matchup is set for 1:05 Eastern Time and SBG Global Sportsbook opened with the Vikings as a 9-point favorite with an over/under total at 41.

Even with the subtraction of Moss and his 2 TDs from the lineup and WR Percy Harvin dinged up and WR Sidney Rice still sidelined the Vikings will still win this game for one simple reason: the Card’s offense is terrible and the Vikings defense is pretty good.

That match up will be the key to this game and so long as the Vikings’ defense can shut down one of the worst quarterbacking tandem in the league and Favre can stay focused on football long enough to hand the ball off to Adrian Peterson and not throw it to the defense Minnesota will get one game closer to .500 in the NFL gambling standings.

It’s a shame that the one player in Minnesota that deserves the headlines hasn’t been getting any at all. RB Adrian Peterson has clearly demonstrated to the doubters that he remains the best RB in the NFL. He leads the league in yards per game (110.9), total rushing yards (776) and has 6 TDs and 4.7 ypc average.

Against a Card’s defense that is giving up 143.1 yards rushing a game and ranks 31st in the total defense (28.3) Peterson should feast.

And the Vikings should get just their 3rd NFL gambling win of the year.

The NFL is a league starved for top QB talent but when the Philadelphia Eagles host the Indianapolis Colts in the Week 9 NFL gambling action fans will get to see two of the best in the business go at on Lincoln Financial Field.

QB Peyton Manning is the gold standard for Quarterback in the NFL and before it’s all said and down will own every NFL passing record (save for Brett Favre’s INT record) and just might be the greatest QB to ever play the game. He in a class by himself and no matter how weak the talent around him he will simply outsmart the defense as he’s also the team’s de facto offensive coordinator.

On the other side of the field the Eagles will start former All-Pro QB with the Falcons and convicted felon/dog fighter Michael Vick. Vick is the greatest athlete to ever play QB in the NFL and despite all odds has transformed himself in Philly into one of the top QBs in the league.

These two QBs offer a contrast in styles and couldn’t be any further apart in terms of skill sets, but at the moment there’s no one better in the NFL betting odds at the position.

Kickoff for this Sunday matchup is set for 4:20 Eastern Time and SBG Global Sportsbook opened with the Eagles as a 3-point favorite with an over/under total at 46.5.

There should be plenty of scoring in this game as these offenses both put up big numbers. The Colts rank 3rd in the league in scoring (27.6 points per game) and the Eagles –despite Vick being injured the past month- rank 8th (24.6 points per game).

Offense will definitely be on the menu as these two teams combine to average almost 400 yards per game and the over/under of 46.5 is the second highest on the betting board right now.

When defense does enter the equation the Colts have the advantage as Indy’s D ranks 12th in the NFL (20.3 ppg) and the Eagles are far down the list giving up 22.4 ppg).

In a battle offenses you have give the nod to Manning, even with a banged up receiving corps, and the Colts should pull off the minor sports betting upset on the road.

In something of a rarity this week’s Monday Night NFL betting odds matchup will feature two teams that are both coming off a Bye week. There’s little doubt that the Indianapolis Colts will benefit the most from this week off as this team has been fighting injuries all season long and would otherwise have to dress coaching staff to fill out the roster.

Indy (4-2) has managed to get off to a strong start despite one of the longest injury lists in the league. Heading into the November 1st Monday Night Meeting with the Houston Texans (4-2) the Colts have a dozen players listed on the injury report. Several key players like WR Austin Collie and S Bob Sanders are out. Others like Joseph Addai is doubtful and stars WR Reggie Wayne, LB Garry Brackett, WR Pierre Garcon and RB Donald Brown are questionable.

Even if the players in that last group suit up they’re not likely to be 100%.

For most teams an injury list like that would mean an end to the season. But most teams don’t have Peyton Manning behind center. Even without his regular crew of receivers he has still managed to keep this team on the winning track in the NFL gambling action and put up huge stats. Through 6 games he’s thrown for 1916 yards (319.3 ypg), 13 TDs and just 2 INTs. His passer rating of 103.4 is tops in the league and the offense is averaging 27.2 ypg (3rd best in the NFL).

Kickoff for this Monday matchup is set for 8:40 Eastern Time and SBG Global Sportsbook opened with the Colts as a 5.5-point favorite with an over/under total at 51.

The only way that the Colts can lose is if Manning doesn’t have the ball in his hands. And the Houston Texans know this very well.

When these two teams met up in Week 1 the Texans gave the Colts’ suspect run defense a steady dose of RB Arian Foster and the result was a 34-24 wins over their hated AFC South rival. Foster finished the day with the greatest rushing performance in Texans’ history (239 yards 3 TDs) and you can be sure we’ll see plenty of Foster on Monday Night.

The Colts run defense is awful (137.2 yards per game and there’s very little reason not to think that Foster will go nuts again, especially in the second half.

Still, it’s tough to bet against Manning and the safe sports betting play is on the home team.

Heading into the 2010 NFL sports betting action both the San Diego Chargers and the Tennessee Titans were expected to be competing for playoff spots.

But so far, with a third of the season in the bag, only the 5-2 Titans still appear to be in the postseason hunt as the Chargers having stumbled to a 2-5 record.

Kickoff for this Sunday matchup is set for 4:10 Eastern Time and SBG Global Sportsbook opened with the Chargers as a 3.5-point favorite with an over/under total at 44.

That the Chargers are favored in this NFL betting odds matchup is a testament to people’s belief that this should be a good team. And it should, but that doesn’t mean that you should keep betting on this squad week and week out just because on paper it’s talented.

Last week against the New England Patriots it was favored at home and how’d that work out? A 23-20 loss.

As difficult as it was too believe that the Bolts could drop to 2-5, it’s even more difficult to think that this team could actually drop to 2-6 and lose back to back games at home.

And as crazy as it sounds the Chargers should win this game.

Bet at your own peril and throw this advice out the window but the law of averages dictates that the Chargers are due for a win after dropping 3 straight games.

And the law of common sense dictates that a team QB’d by Phillip Rivers is going to win more than 2 games. Rivers currently leads the NFL in passing (334.9 ypg, 13 TDs, 6 INTs) and is on pace to break the NFL’s single season yardage record. Even without All Pro WR Vincent Jackson Rivers has been able to turn Malcom Floyd into a star and TE Antonio Gates has proven once again that he is the one of the all time greats at his position with 8 TDs through 7 games.

But at 5-2 the Titans aren’t going to roll over and the team’s defense is tenacious. Tennessee has the 3rd ranked defense in the league giving up just 16.7 ppg. And on offense RB Chris Johnson should do what he does best.
But there are two reasons to like SD in this game. 1) The Bolt’s run D is actually very decent and is giving up just 85.7 yards per game. 2) If the Titan’s D has a weakness it’s in the pass game where it’s giving up 230.4 yards a game.

Pick the Chargers to finally get a win in this NFL gambling showdown.
