Defending champs will not defend Super Bowl Title

The NFL betting lines season, for all intense and purposes, is over for the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers. The almost unwatchable loss to the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night of week 14 action basically sealed the deal. At 6-7 there is almost no hope for the Steelers to defend their title now and the only things left to play for are pride and the betting lines.

This is perhaps one of the most unexpected storylines of the 2009 NFL betting lines, but not entirely unpredictable. Since the age of free agency took root the only team that has successfully defended its Super Bowl title is the New England Patriots. In fact, the odds that a team will repeat as the Super Bowl NFL lines champ are less than 10%.But still, that’s really no excuse for how poorly the Steelers have played this NFL betting season.

On paper the team actually entered the 2009 NFL betting odds as a better, more talented team, than the 2008 Super Bowl championship squad. Injuries have certainly taken their toll but every team has to deal with injured players, it’s simply part of the game and Steelers still had most of their key players.

The most disturbing thing for Coach Mike Tomlin was the way in which his team lost. In five of the teams 7 losses the team gave up fourth quarter leads. And just when the team needed to win the most the Steelers have lost five in a row as the playoff approach, three of those losses to teams with 2 wins or less. With three games left the Steelers can still play spoiler in the wagering lines, but that’s about it.
