NFL Betting Lines: Saints vs 49ers Week 2 Odds

September 20th, 2010 by

saints vs 49ersComing off a 31-6 humiliation in Week 1 of the 2010 NFL gambling season the San Francisco Forty Niners certainly have their work cut out for them in Week 2 when they take on the Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints.

And judging by the scoreboard (the Saints defeated the Vikings 14-9) you wouldn’t think that the Niners would have a snowballs chance in hell against the defending champs. But a deeper look into the stats tells a different story and there’s a very good likelihood that the Niners can hang with the champs and perhaps not win but at least beat the point spread.

Kickoff for this Monday sports betting matchup is set for 8:40 Eastern Time and sbg opened with the Saints as a 2.5-point favorite with an over/under total at 43.5.

Going purely by the Week 1 scores that seem like a reasonable points spread but the problem is that the Niners weren’t terribly outplayed and that the Seahawks won the battle of turnovers. The Seattle defense had a Pick 6 and seemed to always recover the ball in scoring position.

The truth of the matter is that the Niners only gave up 242 yards all game long limiting QB Matt Hasselback to just 170 yards and allowed just 77 yards on the ground. Normally those numbers would always translate into a win. The 31 points given up by the defense was fluke and this unit should give the Saints plenty of problems. With MLB Patrick Willis stuffing gaps the Saints running game should be very limited.

New Orleans QB Drew Brees will be able to find some holes in the secondary but he’ll have to work for it. This isn’t likely to be a big scoring day for the prolific Saints offense.

On offense the Niners will be able to run the ball on the Saints with sturdy O-line and a healthy Frank Gore. Last week the team wasn’t able to show off its running skills as it was playing from behind for so long.

If the Niners can get on the board early and take the pressure off Alex Smith and let Gore do his thing they have a very good chance of beating the point spread in this NFL betting odds matchup and keeping this game close.
