Polamalu Injury Bad News For Champs

84226882JM042_AFC_ChampionsThe Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers may have the best defense in the league but they’ll be without their most important player on that side of the ball for 3-6 weeks, according to team reports. NFL betting lines have the Steelers as a 3 point favorite as they face the Bears in their next game on Sunday.

All-pro safety Troy Polamalu suffered a sprained knee in Thursday’s opener against the Titans as he attempted to recover a blocked field goal. The Steelers’ D is strong enough to withstand the subtraction of any single player but the loss of Polamalu could have a huge impact on NFL betting lines spreads and perhaps even the playoff seedings.

Fortunately for the Steelers they’ve already played the toughest team on their NFL lines schedule until a November 29th battle of attrition with the hated Ravens in Baltimore. With the exception of a week four game at home versus the Chargers, Pittsburgh shouldn’t encounter too many road bumps during the first half of the season. But without the wild-haired Polamalu roving in the secondary the Steelers’ defense is a much more benign unit.

Defensive guru Dick LeBeau has a veteran and talented squad that will survive a month without Polamalu. But it will be a much more conservative unit that produces fewer turnovers and is more susceptible to giving up big plays. Polamalu is an insurance policy in the secondary that allows the blitz-crazy Steelers to send the kitchen sink. Without him back there opposing QBs will have an easier time finding open receivers and put points on the NFL lines board.

And that could mean a harder time covering the NFL betting odds spread against high-octane offenses.
